Product details
Quick Description:
Developing personal, social, and emotional skills is not just beneficial; it is absolutely essential for every child’s ability to thrive. This is why Personal, Social, and Emotional Development (PSED) rightly stands as one of the three prime areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Unfortunately, many children begin their school journey lacking these crucial skills, making it essential that you prioritise their development in your care.
However, it can be tricky to recognise some of the more subtle signs of development - especially when children are very young or you are new to childcare. There is also the question of how you can effectively and practically support their journey?
This pack has been designed to help you support your children's PSED development and lay a strong foundation for their future success in learning and in life.
The pack contains over one hundred descriptions of PSED development stages, written in simple, easy to understand language (no jargon here!) along with sample observations, suggested next steps for the children for each development stage and hundreds more suggested ideas and activities to support children's learning and development.
The pack is organised into four main sections covering the following:
1) Building Relationships with Family, Friends and Other People
2) A Sense of Self - Finding Out about Me and Who I Am
3) Understanding and Managing Emotions and Behaviour
4) Learning to Look After Myself
There are also 30 additional pages of resources for you to use and share with your families.
Further Information:
Developing good personal, social and emotional skills is essential for children to be able to thrive and succeed in life. Lots of children are starting school without the necessary social and self-care skills they need, meaning that it is more crucial than ever that childminders and other early years professionals understand how children develop these attributes and skills so that they can successfully support children and their families to develop them.
There are various documents which list the stages of development children go through in terms of their personal, social and emotional development. These can be useful, but it is sometimes difficult to 'translate' these dry statements into what each child's developmentactually looks like. This pack helps you understand each development stage and where it fits into the child's wider PSED development by taking these statements and simplifying them into language which is easier to understand. There is a sample observation for each one so that you can really get a feel for what each stage of development looks like in real life. This enables you to effectively asses which stage you own children are reaching and so decide 'what's next.'
As well as helping you fully understand the child's development this pack gives you useful and practical ideas for next steps for each and every development stage. There are hundreds of ideas and activities included in the pack so you will always have something you can use to support each stage of the children's development. Here is an example:
Development Stage: Children build relationships with special people but are anxious around strangers.
What You Might Observe: Adam loves joining in with the other children out in the garden on the see saw. We see quite a lot of Odile so Adam and Odile are getting to be quite good friends.
What I Want Children to Learn: Which strangers are ‘safe strangers’.
Things to Try Next: Talk about 'People That Help Us' with children so they understand they can ask people like firefighters, police and teachers for help.
There is also lots of additional useful information, such as tips on weaning children, toilet training and healthy sleep routines as well as interesting information such as how other countries encourage children to look after their environment.
Helping parents understand child development is another task which often falls to early years professionals and common areas of disagreement surround issues such as sleep and nap times, toilet training and food. Included in the 30 pages of additional resources at the end of the pack you will find printable handouts which you can give to parents helping share important information about these topics.
