Quick Description:

This pack is an essential piece of kit to guide and support you through the whole process of completing the statutory Progress Check. It has been designed and updated to empower you and your families to make the best use of the check.

The pack contains progress check samples, information and guidance, templates and full guidance on how to complete your progress check at age two.

This pack has been reformatted and updated for the 2024 EYFS.

More Information:

The 2024 EYFS requires that your progress check:

  • Covers all the Prime Areas of learning.
  • Highlights areas in which a child is progressing well and areas in which the child might need some additional support.
  • It MUST focus particularly on any areas where there is a concern that a child may have a developmental delay, which may indicate a special educational need or disability.
  • Finally you MUST describe the activities and strategies that you intend to adopt to address any issues or concerns. This should involve parents, carers and other professionals (for example, the child’s health visitor) as appropriate.

This pack fully supports you to complete your progress check at age two. It puts you in the driving seat of the whole information-sharing process and allows you to treat any external support you may get as a bonus rather than something you are counting on.

NEW FOR 2024 - Characteristics of Effective Learning Samples and Guidance.

While it is not compulsory to incorporate the Characteristics of Effective Learning in your progress checks, I strongly advise doing so whenever possible. Sharing information about the child's learning methods can provide valuable insights and enable you and other professionals to identify areas where the child may require assistance. Changes and additions have been made to the pack for 2024 to encourage and support you to do this.

The pack contains a new section for 2024. It provides guidance on what to observe, along with sample statements for assessing and describing very young children's characteristics of effective learning. There is also a new template is available for writing comments, offering more flexibility than just using the pre-existing tick list.

The pack contains:

An introduction for the childminder. This document fully guides you through a simple five step process for completing the progress check.

Guidance Notes about what you might observe the children doing, examples of what you might write on the report in relation to this and ideas to include as next steps. These cover all the prime areas as required by the EYFS and include samples of :

  • What you might observe the children doing.

  • What you might write in your report.

  • What you might but in the 'Where to Next' boxes.

There are samples for a range of developmental stages.

  • Not yet at the expected level, may need additional support

  • Lower end of expected level may need additional support in a couple of areas

  • Expected level

  • Above expected level, may need extra challenge in some areas
